APP & TRACKER
CONCEPT STATEMENT
SharkScope is an innovative conservation initiative comprising a biomimicry-inspired satellite tracker and a mobile application designed to protect the critically endangered Australian Grey Nurse Shark. The project’s core mission is to mitigate the existential threat posed by the fishing industry by minimizing its presence in vital shark habitats.
The system utilizes modular, eco-friendly trackers—inspired by the Cookie Cutter shark—which are attached to the shark's dorsal fin to transmit real-time location data via satellite whenever the animal surfaces. This data is relayed directly to the SharkScope app, allowing fishers and maritime professionals to actively identify and avoid shark-populated areas using an interactive map featuring protective buffer zones. Beyond passive tracking, the app empowers users to become part of the cause through a reporting system for untagged sharks or illegal fishing activities. By combining a user-friendly interface with advanced tracking technology, SharkScope enables the fishing industry to navigate habitats responsibly, fostering population recovery and the long-term survival of the species.
